There was a seed
Became… a tree
It takes so damn long to create each thing
There was the old man of the tree
Crazy old man, guess he’s lost at sea
I haven’t the patience to deal with this problem
You hang in the branches and weather the storm
If you need a loan, well I’ll be in town
Grab a giant wooden lung, you’ll be the last to hit the ground
As for this seed
I can’t believe in ten years’ time…
Poof! There’d be a full-grown tree
I cannot wait that long, you see
In ten years’ time who knows where I’ll be?
Hey hey, eye high
We’ll meet again some other time
Hey hey, I’m fine
You’ve got your world and I’ve got mine
Score me a point for how it looks today
I came up short but bought it anyway
I had to have it
All the world’s abuzz
I cannot remember just what it does
I’ll place it right here on my mantle of splendor
Perhaps it will breathe of our human sexcess!
It’s off to the moon or those communists will
And there’ll be the wrong flag standing airless and still
I’ll live a life on VCR
Fast forward where the bad parts are (You star!)
Multiple takes, minimal scars
Install a screen right inside my car
Hey hey, eye high
Look out ahead, I’m passing by
Hey hey, I fly
I’m not about to take my time
Now a merger tree grew to unheard of proportions
Consisting of steroids and plastics and Spam
Its branches were miles of mechanical shoots
Weighing down, tearing up all its critical roots
Crazy old man lived in a tree
Breathed in its air, but missed his T and V
Ate of its fruit, smelled of its leaves
That wilt in the shade of expansive dreams
Hey hey, eye high
Go on ahead, I’ll stay behind
Hey hey, I’m fine
I think I’ll hang ’round here a while
Hey hey, eye high
We’ll meet again some other time
Hey hey, sky high
Up here I’ll be the last to die
Hey hey, eye high
We’ll meet again some other time
Hey hey, that crazy old man cried (Don’t cry)
“I’ll spread my wings now watch me fly!”
We’ll meet again, we’ll meet again, we’ll meet again
Crazy old man
Crazy old man laughing screaming is dragged to the future
Crazy old man had his hand in the past
Crazy, crazy, crazy, lazy
Crazy, crazy, crazy, oh
Crazy, crazy, crazy, lazy
Crazy, crazy, crazy old man
Crazy, crazy, crazy, lazy
Crazy, crazy, crazy, oh
Crazy, crazy, crazy, lazy
Crazy old man

Notes
Crazy Old Man features guitarist Hershel Yatovitz, who went on to become lead guitarist of the Chris Isaak band within months of recording this. It also features the finely nuanced performances of some birds and farm animals who get scared off by a train. No other song can claim this combination of talent.
